Search, Identify, Predict and Decide

Search for hazards. This means that drivers must constantly search for anything that could cause them to change speed or direction. The search process should not be restricted to only forward vision but to the sides and rear as well. Hazards should also be searched for every 12 seconds before you reach it. Allow the eyes to scan continuously from one hazard to another.

Identify the type of hazard. When a hazard is identified during the search process , ask yourself " Is it stationary or a moving hazard and how will it affect my speed and/or direction. A parked school bus dropping off children presents far more  potential hazard than a blind man and his guide dog on the pavement.

Predict how one will be influenced by the hazard. Once the hazard has been identified you must predict how it could affect you. If the hazard can move, how will it affect you as the driver? Is it moving towards you or away from you? Always predict the worst that could happen.

Decide what action to take.

In order to be a safe driver , vehicle control is essential. To have an idea of what driving / controling the actual vehicle is made up of can be explained by dividing it into four parts.

1: Pulling off

2: Changing gears

3: Steering

4: Stopping

Once you are able to master these four driving maneuvers your confidence will be boosted and you will be able to concentrate better on  road signs and traffic conditions.
